CQWW SSB Contest 2014 Win

May 3, 2015 Comments off

M4AI played a very small part in the M4A team win in the CQWW SSB Contest 2014, but it’s really satisfying to see my callsign amongst the list of team members on the winners certificate for the Multi-Operator Single-Transmitter England category.

Triple Club Contest Success 2012

January 8, 2013 Comments off

2012 turned out to be an excellent contesting year for two of the radio clubs that I enter club contests with. I really enjoy the format of the various club contests because everyone in the team can contribute their various individual strengths while helping to build a great club/team spirit.

Camb-Hams finished in 1st place in the RSGB AFS Super League for Winter 2011-12. The league takes the combined results from six separate Affiliated Societies contests, so it’s a great team effort and a fantastic result. I took part in the three HF legs with the team.

RSGB AFS Super League - Winter 2011-12
                       50 1.8 144 3.5 3.5 432 Total
1 Camb-Hams 968 966 925 901 967 897 5624
2 Bristol CG 1000 983 800 951 1000 828 5562
3 Trowbridge & DARC 871 898 1000 568 856 1000 5193

De Montfort University ARS finished in 1st place in the RSGB 80m Club Championship 2012 (General Club). The series runs from February to July each year on the 80m band, with SSB, Data and CW legs each month, making a total of 18 legs. De Montfort University ARS won the championship for the first three years it was held, in 2004, 2005 and 2006, so it was great to return to the top of the table again. The Championship was split into two sections for the first time this year, with national clubs entering the General Club section and local clubs entering the Local Club section (with all their members operating within 35km of the club’s usual meeting place). Norfolk ARC won the Local Club section with a higher score than the De Montfort University ARS General Club score, so Norfolk ARC take the G5RV trophy. Many congratulations to Norfolk ARC – a fantastic effort involving a large number of their members.

I was really pleased to achieve my own personal goal of entering all 18 legs of the Championship this year to contribute to the De Montfort University ARS team score. Next year, I’ll focus on improving each of my individual scores.

RSGB 80M Club Championship 2012
General Club Scores
1 De Montfort University ARS 123,535
2 Bristol CG 117,974

Local Club Scores

2 Tall Trees CG 71,977
3 Horsham ARC 68,498

De Montfort University ARS also finished in 1st place in the RSGB 80m Club Sprint 2012. The series runs from August to November each year on the 80m band, with SSB and CW legs each month, making a total of 8 legs. De Montfort University ARS have won the 80m Club Sprint series every year since it was formally run in 2008. I only managed a small contribution to the team score this year, but still enjoyed the legs I took part in.

UBN Report for RSGB 80m AFS CW

March 2, 2012 Comments off

The UBN Reports are out for the RSGB 80m AFS CW Contest which took place on 8 Jan 2012.

My own UBN report is copied below. I’m really happy with only dropping 3 QSO’s (30 points) because I don’t really ‘do’ CW and need a lot of help and concentration to even follow the very predictable contest exchanges. Two of the ‘broken’ serial numbers are very understandable (85/95 and 28/128) but what was I thinking when I mistakenly logged 111 instead of 165 ?

I finished with 147 adjudicated QSO’s for 1470 points, to make a small contribution to the Camb-Hams B team for 26th place in the contest. The Camb-Hams A team did really well this year, finishing in 9th place. Both teams making a significant improvement over last years placings. A good contest and I’d encourage others to give it a try.

1st Place for DMUARS in RSGB 80m Club Sprint 2011

December 11, 2011 Comments off

The result of the RSGB 80m Club Sprint 2011 contests have been announced and I’m very happy to say that the team I play a small part in has finished first again. De Montfort University ARS have now won the contest series for four years in succession to retain the Newbury Trophy.

RSGB 80m Club Sprint 2011 Final Results
Pos Club Name                    Total SSB   CW
1 * De Montfort University ARS 48106 25157 22949

5   OSSETT ARO                   21715  9301 12414

1st place in the RSGB 80m Club Sprint and 2nd place in the RSGB 80m Club Championship make this a pretty good year.

DMUARS have some really great contesters in the team and I’m very pleased to be able to share some of the glory with them once again.

2nd Place for DMUARS in RSGB 80m CC 2011

August 18, 2011 Comments off

The results of the RSGB 80m Club Championship 2011 have been published.

Congratulation to Bristol GC for maintaining their strong lead throughout the Championship. But the great news, as far as I’m concerned, is that De Montfort University ARS managed to fight off a very strong challenge from Norfolk ARC to finish in second place this year.

RSGB 80m Club Championship 2011   Final Results
Pos Club Name                     Total  CW    SSB   Data
1   Bristol CG                    147869 50227 53695 43947
2 * De Montfort University ARS    120557 39393 35402 45762

4   Newbury & DARS                 99747 37402 30342 32003
5   Three As CG                    85368 44167 24869 16332

I joined the De Montfort University ARS almost ten years ago and have been lucky enough to play a small part in many contest-winning team entries since then, collecting at least one team contest trophy every year, except for 2007 if I remember correctly.

It’s now time to concentrate on the RSGB 80m Club Sprints for 2011.

A busy couple of weeks

August 10, 2011 Comments off

It’s been a really busy couple of weeks so I haven’t had much time to post anything here. I think that’s a good thing because the ‘doing’ is more important than the ‘writing’. I’m still short of time so this post isn’t going to be filled with details and deep thoughts, just a brief note of some of the things I’ve been doing and a few pictures to go with them …

Back Garden UKAC

July 11, 2011 Comments off

I have been active mostly on HF recently, but the VHF NFD re-ignited my interest in the higher bands, so I decided to put up a very temporary antenna and make a few contacts in the RSGB 144MHz UKAC contest last week, just for fun. I used to take part in the RSGB Backpackers contests a few years ago, so I dusted off the 6m aluminium mast but couldn’t find my portable 9 element Tonna antenna for 2m, so I decided to put together the 2m halo antenna I’d had for years and never used.

I got everything together, with the help of some cable ties and tape, connected the Yaesu FT-897 on the garden table and … it started to absolutely poor with rain. I did manage a few brief contacts while the rain was running down my neck but I quickly decided to give up and try again another day. It was fun, but maybe more fun next time.

Update … I had another go tonight for the RSGB 432MHz UKAC. I put my very small 70cm beam on the mast, got the radio out and … it rained again. I’m sure the RSGB are working with the Met Office to co-ordinate contests and weather !

Maybe next time.

UBN Reports for RSGB 80m Club Championships

July 5, 2011 Comments off

The RSGB Contest Committee have started issuing UBN Reports for the 80m Club Championship contests. This is a very welcome addition to the already excellent on-line log submission and quick adjudication we have enjoyed for these contests.

UBN Reports highlight contest contacts which were judged to be Unique, Bad and Not-in-log during adjudication and can be used to help improve the accuracy of your logging. I received an email today with a link to my UBN report for the May RSGB 80m Club Championship CW contest, which highlighted exactly why I lost one of my claimed contacts during the adjudication process.

RSGB VHF NFD

July 4, 2011 Comments off

I had a great weekend with the Camb-Hams operating G3PYE/P from JO02ed on 6m, 4m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm in the RSGB VHF NFD 2011. It’s hard work preparing, assembling, operating and disassembling a competitive station for this contest, but the Camb-Hams put a lot of effort into collecting some great equipment and operators and still manage to make it a lot of fun.

It was nice to get back together with many of the people who I travelled to the Isle of Arran with a few months ago for some more great radio.

Lawrence M0LCM and Dom M0BLF have both posted some photographs of the G3PYE/P contest site and G7HAH/P have posted a video of them receiving G3PYE/P.
